Chousatti Ghat
Chousatti Ghat (also spelled Chaursathi) takes its name from the Chausath Yogini Temple — dedicated to the 64 yoginis, powerful female deities in the Shakta-Tantric tradition. The temple was originally modelled after the famous Chausath Yogini temples of Khajuraho and Jabalpur. The ghat was rebuilt by the King of Udaipur and later by Peshwa Narayan Dixit. It sits between the intense energy of Harishchandra cremation ghat and the colorful Kedar Ghat, providing a transitional space for pilgrims.
Spiritual & Historical Significance
The 64 Yoginis represent the feminine divine in its most powerful aspect — each yogini embodies a different shakti (power). The temple here is one of the few Chausath Yogini temples still active in India and connects Varanasi to the tantric traditions that have flourished alongside the more mainstream Shaivite worship.
