Sarnath — Where Buddhism Was Born

Located just 10 km northeast of Varanasi, Sarnath stands as one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Buddhism, marking the precise location where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. The name 'Sarnath' derives from the Sanskrit word Sāranganātha, meaning 'Lord of the Deer.' The area was originally called Mriga-dāva (deer park) or Isipatana in Pali, meaning 'the place where holy men descended.' Around 528 BCE, when Buddha was approximately 35 years old, he set the Wheel of Dharma in motion here — the Dharmachakrapravartana — preaching to his first five disciples: Kaundinya, Assaji, Bhaddiya, Vappa, and Mahanama.
