Harishchandra Ghat
Discover the ancient rhythms of Varanasi at Harishchandra Ghat, one of the city's two primary cremation sites and its oldest ghat. Named after the legendary King Harishchandra, famed for his unyielding commitment to truth, this sacred spot offers profound insights into Hindu beliefs about death and liberation.
Overview
Harishchandra Ghat is one of the two primary cremation ghats of Varanasi (the other being Manikarnika) and is considered the oldest ghat in the city. Named after the legendary King Harishchandra — celebrated in Hindu mythology for his absolute commitment to truth — who is said to have worked here as a Dom (cremation attendant) to honour a promise. Hindu belief holds that cremation at this ghat liberates the soul from the cycle of rebirth. The electric crematorium here was among the first in India, offering a modern alternative alongside the traditional wood pyres.
Spiritual & Historical Significance
Harishchandra Ghat predates even Manikarnika as a cremation site. King Harishchandra's story of unwavering truthfulness, in which he sold himself into servitude rather than break a promise, is one of the most powerful moral tales in Hindu tradition. Gandhi himself drew inspiration from this king. The ghat handles hundreds of cremations and symbolizes Varanasi's unique relationship with death — not as an end, but as moksha.
