Manikarnika & Harishchandra Ghats — The Sacred Door to Eternity
Varanasi's Ancient Cremation Grounds Manikarnika and Harishchandra Ghats represent the eternal cycle of life and death that defines Varanasi's spiritual identity. These two ghats are dedicated to the ultimate transformation — from physical existence to spiritual liberation (moksha). It is believed that dying and being cremated in Varanasi guarantees freedom from the cycle of rebirth. Both ghats operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with bodies prepared through ceremonial baths, dressed in new clothes, and placed on pyres of sacred wood while priests perform Pinda Daan with Vedic chants.
The Two Sacred Ghats
Manikarnika — The Divine Earring
Named after the legend of Parvati's earring falling into the Ganges. Maintains a sacred fire burning continuously for millennia, believed to originate from Shiva's third eye. One of the most powerful Shakti Peethas.
Harishchandra — Kingdom of Truth
Named after King Harishchandra, renowned for his unwavering commitment to truth. The oldest ghat, representing equality in death — all worldly distinctions disappear before the divine.
