राणा महल घाट
Rana Mahal Ghat
Rana Mahal Ghat
Discover the majestic Rana Mahal Ghat, a blend of Rajasthani grandeur and Varanasi's sacred shores, built in the 17th century by King Rana Pratap Jagat Singh of Udaipur.
Overview
Established in the second half of the 17th century by King Rana Pratap Jagat Singh of Udaipur, who built both the ghat and the magnificent Rana Mahal palace that overlooks it. The palace is constructed in the distinctive Rajasthani architectural style with ornate jharokhas (overhanging balconies) and intricate stone carvings. In the northern and southern sections of the ghat, 18th-century Shiva temples add to the spiritual atmosphere. Legend holds that Rana Jagat Singh himself stayed in this mahal during his visit to Kashi in 1765.
Spiritual & Historical Significance
The ghat demonstrates how rulers from across India invested in Varanasi's sacred infrastructure. The Rajput kings of Udaipur, devotees of Lord Shiva, considered it a privilege to build along Kashi's ghats. The palace architecture is a fine example of Rajasthani craftsmanship transplanted to the Gangetic setting. The ghat was repaired by the State Government in 1965.
