Shivala Ghat
Discover Shivala Ghat, the 'abode of Shiva', where Nepali royalty and South Indian heritage blend seamlessly along Varanasi's sacred riverfront. 🛕
Shivala Ghat, meaning 'abode of Shiva', is dominated by a colossal building constructed by the Nepali King Sanjay Vikram Shah. A Shiva temple overlooking the ghat gives it its name. This area has been home to a large South Indian community that settled in Banaras over the last two centuries for business and religious purposes. The ghat has a grand, palace-like appearance from the river and is one of the more architecturally impressive ghats in the southern stretch. The original name of the nearby Chet Singh Ghat was also Shivala Ghat.
Spiritual & Historical Significance
Experience the pan-Indian essence of Varanasi at Shivala Ghat, where diverse cultures converge in devotion to Lord Shiva. 🪔
The ghat demonstrates the pan-Indian character of Varanasi — Nepali royalty building temples, South Indian communities establishing themselves, and Shaivite worship forming the spiritual core. The Shiva temple here is part of the dense network of Shiva shrines that make Kashi the city of Mahadeva.
