Beyond the Ghats: A Sacred Circuit Linking Kashi Vishwanath, Vindhyavasini and Sarnath
For travellers who want to look beyond Varanasi's famous ghats, the region offers a rich spiritual circuit that weaves together three very different sacred worlds — the Shaivite, the Shakti and the Buddhist — all within easy reach of the city. The journey naturally begins at the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the spiritual heart of Kashi. After darshan, many pilgrims travel roughly ninety minutes to Vindhyachal in neighbouring Mirzapur, home to the revered Vindhyavasini Devi Temple. As one of the important Shakti Peethas, it draws devotees year-round, and the pilgrimage is often completed with the Trikon Parikrama linking the temples of Vindhyavasini, Ashtabhuja and Kali Khoh. Back near Varanasi lies Sarnath, one of the most significant sites in the Buddhist world. It was here, in the quiet Deer Park, that Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. The towering Dhamek Stupa, the ruins of ancient monasteries and the excellent archaeological museum — home to the famous Lion Capital of Ashoka — make it a place of both peace and deep history. Together, these destinations show why the Varanasi region has drawn seekers for thousands of years. Within a short radius, a visitor can offer prayers at a Jyotirlinga, seek the blessings of the Devi, and walk the very ground where Buddhism began. It is a reminder that Kashi is not just a city, but a doorway to many paths of faith.
