IIT (BHU) Varanasi adds new chip design and medical device courses for 2026–27
IIT (BHU) Varanasi is expanding its academic offerings for the 2026–27 session, opening new M.Tech specialisations aligned with some of the fastest-growing fields in engineering. The institute is introducing streams in VLSI Architecture and Chip Design, Medical Devices, and Tunnelling and Underground Space Engineering, along with a new Ph.D. programme in Decision Science and Engineering. The additions reflect the institute's push under the National Education Policy 2020 to build future-ready, interdisciplinary courses that connect classroom learning with real industry needs. Chip design and semiconductors, in particular, sit at the centre of India's growing electronics ambitions, while the medical devices stream opens doors in healthcare technology — both areas where trained talent is in high demand. The new programmes were highlighted as IIT (BHU) marked its inaugural Institute Day, "Utthaan," on 29 June 2026, an occasion that also celebrated academic and alumni achievements and reaffirmed the institute's commitment to research and innovation. Admissions to the M.Tech, M.Pharm and Ph.D. programmes for the July 2026 semester are being conducted through the usual GATE-based process. For students in Varanasi and across the region, the expansion means more world-class options close to home, and another sign of Kashi steadily strengthening its reputation as a hub for higher learning and cutting-edge research.
