Ninety teachers from eight districts, honoured at BHU as Kashi opens its Teachers' Day season

The Teachers' Day season opened early in Kashi on Sunday, with an auditorium full of schoolteachers at Banaras Hindu University. The Sambodhi auditorium in the Faculty of Social Sciences hosted a symposium on the challenges and possibilities before India's education system, organised by the Professor Hariharnath Tripathi Foundation, and ninety teachers drawn from eight districts including Varanasi were honoured with an angavastram at the close. The discussion stayed on the ground rather than in policy abstraction. Speakers argued that a teacher's part in a child's academic, social and moral growth has no substitute, and that schooling should be judged by the character it builds rather than treated as a commercial service. Several returned to the gap between rural and urban classrooms, asking that education policy be rewritten for changing times so that a child in a village school is not measured against a different standard from one in the city. Professors Anjali Vajpayee, Dheeraj Kishor, Saroj Upadhyay, Supriya Singh and Vibha Ray were among those who spoke, and Prof. Kshemendra Mani Tripathi coordinated the programme. Teachers' Day falls on 5 September, and the honours at BHU came a week ahead of it — the ninety walking out of Sambodhi with an angavastram over one shoulder and a full week of school still in front of them.
