Sawan comes to Kashi: Varanasi readies its temple grounds and lanes for the month-long Shravan fair
As the monsoon settles over Kashi, the city is preparing for one of its most beloved seasonal traditions: the Sawan Mela, the fair that fills Varanasi through the holy month of Shravan. Local listings place this year's fair over the weeks of Shravan, from late July into August, timed with the Sawan period when devotees throng the city's Shiva temples. The mela traditionally spreads across well-loved gathering spaces, from the historic Durgakund temple grounds to the open fields near Sarnath. Through the evenings these become a swirl of colour and sound: the beat of the dholak, bhajans in praise of Bholenath, and the familiar aromas of samosas, panipuri and fresh sweets drifting between stalls of flowers, toys and puja articles. For families it is an easy, joyful outing; for visitors, a chance to feel the devotional pulse of Kashi in its most festive season. Entry is free, keeping the fair open to everyone. With chants of "Har Har Mahadev" carrying through the lanes, the Sawan Mela is once again set to turn Varanasi's monsoon weeks into a celebration of faith, food and community.
