Trials on the mat in Varanasi: the division picks its sub-junior wrestlers for the state championship

Informational post · compiled by HelloBanaras

The mats were busy at a Varanasi stadium this week, with young wrestlers from across the Varanasi division turning up for the selection trial for the state sub-junior wrestling championship. The state meet is scheduled at Kaushambi from August 21 to 23, and the wrestlers chosen here will carry the division's name into it. For an age-group wrestler, a trial like this is the only door into a state meet, and it swings on a few minutes at a time — one bout, in front of coaches who have watched thousands of them. Experienced coaches supervised the day's bouts, and entrants had come in from the different districts of the division rather than from the city alone, which is what makes a divisional trial worth watching: talent from a small-town akhara gets the same mat and the same three minutes as anyone else. International wrestler Bacche Lal was present at the trial, and his message to the youngsters was the unglamorous one — stay disciplined, and put in more work. For a sub-junior stepping up to this level for the first time, a trial at home is the cheapest lesson going: you learn exactly where your game stands before the state meet tells you.
