Two Days in Varanasi: A Budget-Friendly Itinerary for Kashi Vishwanath, the Ghats and Sarnath

Informational post · compiled by HelloBanaras

Varanasi rewards even the shortest of visits. With trains connecting the city to Delhi and most major Indian cities, a well-planned two-day itinerary is enough for a first-time visitor to experience Kashi Vishwanath Dham, the riverfront ghats, the evening Ganga Aarti and the Buddhist heritage of Sarnath — all without straining the wallet. Day one belongs to the old city. Arrive early, check into one of the many budget guesthouses near Godowlia or the ghats, and head for darshan at Kashi Vishwanath Dham. The corridor connecting the temple to Lalita Ghat has made the visit far smoother for pilgrims, with organised queues and clear signage. Afterwards, wander through Vishwanath Gali for kachori-sabzi, chaat and the famous Banarasi paan, then walk to Dashashwamedh Ghat to find a spot for the evening Ganga Aarti — arriving forty-five minutes early usually gets you a good view. Day two starts on the river. A sunrise boat ride from Assi or Dashashwamedh Ghat offers the classic panorama of the crescent-shaped riverfront, with temple spires and centuries-old palaces glowing in the first light. Later, take a short ride to Sarnath, where the Buddha delivered his first sermon; the Dhamek Stupa and the archaeological museum can be covered comfortably in half a day. Budget travellers will find Kashi remarkably friendly: the old city is best explored on foot, street food is inexpensive and delicious, and shared autos connect the major sights. If you are visiting during Sawan or the monsoon, expect larger crowds on Mondays and a majestic, swollen Ganga at the ghats — plan your darshan for early morning and keep the itinerary flexible.
