Varanasi moves closer to a bullet train as design work begins on the Delhi–Kashi corridor
Good news for anyone who travels between Kashi and the capital: the proposed Delhi–Varanasi high-speed rail corridor has taken a concrete step forward. The National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL) has invited design bids for the civil structures along the route — one of seven bullet-train corridors announced in the Union Budget 2026-27. Once built, the corridor is expected to shrink the Delhi–Varanasi journey to roughly three hours and fifty minutes, linking our city with Noida, Agra and Prayagraj along the way. The line is also planned to reach eastward toward Patna and Siliguri, weaving Varanasi into a much larger high-speed network across northern and eastern India. For residents, students and the steady stream of pilgrims and visitors who come to Kashi, faster and more comfortable travel could mean easier trips home, stronger business links and a fresh boost for local tourism and hospitality. The project is still in its planning and design stage, so there is no travel date yet — but the new design bids show the idea moving from paper toward the ground. It is an exciting glimpse of how Banaras keeps stepping into the future while holding on to its timeless spirit.
