Varanasi Ring Road Update: New Ganga Bridge Partially Opens, Easing Traffic Around Kashi
Varanasi's transformation into a smoothly connected modern city has taken another significant step forward. The Varanasi Ring Road project, a nearly 60-kilometre six-lane bypass encircling the ancient city, has reached a new milestone with one side of its 1.8-kilometre Ganga bridge now open to traffic, while work continues on the second carriageway. The Ring Road is one of the most ambitious infrastructure undertakings in the region. It links several major national highways — including the Lucknow, Azamgarh, Gorakhpur, and Ayodhya routes — allowing heavy trucks and long-distance traffic to bypass the crowded inner city entirely. Phase one of the project opened back in 2018, followed by a second stretch in 2021, and the remaining sections, including the new Ganga bridge, are steadily nearing completion. For residents and visitors alike, the benefits are easy to appreciate. Less transit traffic through the city means cleaner air, reduced fuel consumption, and shorter travel times on Varanasi's famously busy streets. The project also improves access to Sarnath, the revered Buddhist pilgrimage site, and makes commuting between Varanasi and neighbouring districts such as Chandauli far more convenient. Beyond the numbers, the Ring Road reflects a thoughtful balance: preserving the timeless spiritual character of Kashi's ghats and galis while building world-class infrastructure around them. As the second side of the Ganga bridge progresses toward completion, Varanasi moves closer to a future where ancient heritage and modern connectivity travel comfortably side by side.
