The ghats of Varanasi form an iconic, crescent-shaped sweep of stone steps along the western bank of the sacred Ganges. Over 84 individual ghats stretch 6.8 km, each with its own history, presiding deity, and character. Assi Ghat stands as the vibrant southern anchor of this spiritual ecosystem — situated at the confluence of the Ganges and the Assi River, where Goddess Durga is believed to have thrown her sword (Asi) after defeating demons Shumbha and Nishumbha.
