The west is workaday Varanasi: the Banaras Locomotive Works township with its planned avenues, Manduadih (Banaras) railway station, and fast-growing residential colonies out to Chitaipur and Rohaniya on the Allahabad road. Few monuments, honest local markets — useful for long stays, family visits and rail connections rather than sightseeing.
