Varanasi's garba and dandiya nights for Navratri 2026: what's on 19 and 25 October, tickets, what to wear and how to get there.
6 min read
Garba and dandiya have become one of the biggest evening draws of Sharadiya Navratri in Varanasi. Lawns and banquet halls across the city now host ticketed nights with DJs, live dhol and prizes for the best traditional outfit. Dance studios in Mahmoorganj, Sigra and Lanka were running full garba batches weeks before the festival. This guide lists the nights still to come in 2026, what each one offers, and how to plan your evening.

Already held this Navratri
Garba-E-Banaras 2.0 ("Gujarati hits in Banarasi beats"), by Evephoria, was held at Shringar Vatika in Bhagwanpur on 17 and 18 October, with tickets from ₹399 to ₹799. Dhindhora Dandiya 5 was held at the Ganesh Mandapam lawn in Nati Imli on the same two evenings, with a live set by singer Aarti Khetarpal. Both are worth watching for next year: the city's bigger nights now return each Navratri with a new edition number.
Garba, dandiya and what they mean
Garba
A circle dance of worship to the Goddess. Traditionally the dancers move around a lit lamp in an earthen pot, the garbo, which stands for the Mother's flame. It starts with slow claps and steps and builds speed as the night goes on.
Dandiya raas
Danced in pairs with two short decorated sticks, struck in rhythm with a partner. It is linked to the raas of Radha and Krishna, and is the part most lawn nights end with.
From Gujarat to Kashi
For years garba in Varanasi was mostly a Gujarati community celebration. A studio owner told ETV Bharat this year that about nine in ten of his garba students are now local Banarasi girls and working women.
Learning the steps
Studios in Mahmoorganj, Sigra, Rathyatra, Lanka and Sundarpur run garba batches before Navratri, often in a morning slot and an evening slot. Batches fill up, so sign up about a month before Navratri.
What to wear
- Traditional dress is expected, and two of the nights above require it.
- Women: a mirror-work chaniya choli or ghagra with oxidised jewellery is the classic look; palazzo-style garba outfits are this year's trend in the city's shops.
- Men: a kurta with pyjama or dhoti, or a Gujarati kediyu, with a bright dupatta.
- Shoes: you will be on your feet for hours on grass. Flat, closed footwear you can dance in beats new heels.
Getting there
- 19 October is a busy night anywhere in the city. It is the last night of Navratri, and Dussehra follows on 20 October, with crowds at Durga puja pandals and Ravan Dahan grounds. Leave early and expect the central crossings (Sigra, Rathyatra, Lahurabir, Godowlia) to be slow.
- 25 October is also the closing day of the Varanasi Air Show, with road diversions around midday. They should be over by the evening, but allow extra time.
- Most lawns have limited parking. An auto or e-rickshaw to the gate is often quicker than finding a space.
