Safety Tips for Travelers
Safety Tips for Travelers
Varanasi has a deep-rooted culture of hospitality — but like any tourist city, awareness is your best travel companion.
Safety Overview
Stay aware in crowds, at night, and as a woman or international traveler — Varanasi is welcoming and safe with basic precautions.
Crowd Safety
Major festivals draw millions. Keep valuables in a money belt, avoid isolated spots during large events. Extra Awareness
Night Safety
Main ghat areas are safe at night. Avoid poorly lit lanes after midnight. Trust your instincts. Mild Caution
Women Travelers
Generally very safe. Stick to main lanes after dark; cover shoulders in ghat areas; Tourist Police is responsive. Generally Safe
International Visitors
Extremely welcoming culture. Violent crime targeting tourists is exceptionally rare. Atithi Devo Bhava. Very Safe
Common Scams & The Fix
Know the plays before you encounter them — a little prep makes all the difference.
🧭 The "Free Guide"
Most common scam at ghats & stations. A friendly young man offers to show you around for free — then steers you to commission-paying silk shops where prices are inflated 300–500%.
✅ The Fix: Book guides only through your hotel, hellobanaras.com, or the UP Tourism office. Politely decline all unsolicited offers.
🛥️ Boat Price Inflation
Very common at major ghats. Operators quote ₹2,000–3,000 for a sunrise ride that should cost ₹200–500. The price is often stated vaguely until you're already on the water.
✅ The Fix: Always agree on price, duration, and route BEFORE boarding. Know fair prices (see table below) and walk away if refused.
🏨 Hotel Switch
Common at train station & airport. Drivers claim your booked hotel is "closed," "flooded," or "under renovation" — then take you to a commission-paying alternative at higher cost.
✅ The Fix: Call your hotel directly to confirm before leaving the station. Use prepaid taxi counters. Ignore all verbal "news" from taxi drivers.
🪵 "Wood Donation" at Manikarnika
At cremation ghats. Men approach visitors at Manikarnika Ghat requesting money for cremation wood for a "poor family." Genuine cremation costs are handled by families, not collected from tourists.
✅ The Fix: Decline politely and walk on. Never give money to individuals at cremation ghats. Your phone should stay in your pocket here — no photography.

Health & Food Safety
Varanasi's street food is extraordinary — these simple rules keep you healthy to enjoy it all.
Safe First Bets
Kachori, jalebi, packaged lassi — freshly fried food is generally safer. Build up to spicier dishes after 48 hours.
Water Rule
Bottled water only — check the seal is intact. Avoid tap water, ice from unknown sources, and raw street salads.
Medicine Pack
Carry ORS sachets, anti-diarrheal, and personal prescriptions. Most medicines available without prescription at pharmacies.
Medical Facilities
Sir Sunderlal Hospital at BHU and Heritage Hospital are well-equipped. Pharmacies on virtually every main road.
The Ganga
Sacred but not for swimming or drinking. If you take a ritual dip, keep mouth closed and shower immediately after.
Adjustment Period
Give your stomach 24–48 hours to adjust. Light meals, chai, and fruits help ease the transition to Banarasi cuisine.
