Tulsi Ghat
Discover the serene charm of Tulsi Ghat, a timeless riverside haven in Varanasi named after the revered poet-saint Goswami Tulsidas. Immerse yourself in its rich literary heritage and spiritual aura, where ancient traditions come alive along the sacred Ganga.
Overview
Tulsi Ghat is named after the legendary poet-saint Goswami Tulsidas (1497-1623), who composed significant portions of the Ramcharitmanas — the Hindi retelling of the Ramayana — while living here. Originally known as Lolark Ghat, this ancient site houses the famous Lolark Kund, a sacred well believed to cure infertility. On the sixth day of the bright half of Bhadrapada month, thousands of women visit Lolark Kund to pray for children. The ghat also hosts the first-ever Ramlila performance, a tradition that has continued for over four centuries.
Spiritual & Historical Significance
Tulsi Ghat is among the oldest ghats of Kashi with deep literary and spiritual significance. The manuscript of the Ramcharitmanas is said to have once fallen into the Ganga near this ghat and miraculously floated rather than sinking — a sign of divine approval. Tulsidas established a monastery, a Hanuman temple, and an akhara (wrestling arena) above the ghat. The annual Ramlila performed here is considered the original from which all Ramlilas across India descend.
