महाशिवरात्रि — शिव की महान रात्रि
Maha Shivaratri
Maha Shivaratri
The Great Night of Shiva in Varanasi — a night of cosmic dance, divine marriage, and infinite light. Experience the city's eternal devotion to Lord Shiva.
Why Varanasi for Shivaratri?
No city on Earth is more intimately connected to Lord Shiva — Kashi is his eternal abode. Varanasi is known as the city of Shiva — Kashi, the luminous one, is said to rest permanently in his trident.
Maha Shivaratri (the Great Night of Shiva) celebrates multiple sacred events: the night of Shiva's cosmic dance (Tandava), the night his marriage to Parvati was consummated, and in some traditions, the night the Shivalinga first appeared as an infinite pillar of light.
On this night in Varanasi, the Kashi Vishwanath temple — one of the twelve Jyotirlingas — sees queues stretching for kilometres as pilgrims wait through the night for darshan. The four Prahars (watches of the night) each have their own rituals: bathing the Shivalinga with milk, honey, ghee, curd, and sacred water, while devotees fast, chant Om Namah Shivaya, and keep vigil until dawn. The entire city vibrates with a low, constant hum of devotion that is unlike anything experienced during any other festival.
The Four Prahars of the Night
Maha Shivaratri is divided into four sacred watches — each with its own ritual offering.
6 PM – 9 PM: Abhishek with Milk
The Shivalinga is bathed with milk and devotees begin their night-long vigil. Temples fill immediately.
9 PM – 12 AM: Abhishek with Curd
Curd offered to the linga. Processions wind through the old city. Bhajans and chanting intensify.
12 AM – 3 AM: Abhishek with Ghee
The deepest hour of the night. Considered the most spiritually potent time. The ghats are luminous with lamps.
3 AM – Dawn: Abhishek with Honey
As dawn approaches, the final offering is made. Pilgrims who stayed awake receive special blessings at sunrise.
