Why Varanasi for Shivaratri?

No city on Earth is more intimately connected to Lord Shiva — Kashi is his eternal abode. Varanasi is known as the city of Shiva — Kashi, the luminous one, is said to rest permanently in his trident.

Maha Shivaratri (the Great Night of Shiva) celebrates multiple sacred events: the night of Shiva's cosmic dance (Tandava), the night his marriage to Parvati was consummated, and in some traditions, the night the Shivalinga first appeared as an infinite pillar of light.

On this night in Varanasi, the Kashi Vishwanath temple — one of the twelve Jyotirlingas — sees queues stretching for kilometres as pilgrims wait through the night for darshan. The four Prahars (watches of the night) each have their own rituals: bathing the Shivalinga with milk, honey, ghee, curd, and sacred water, while devotees fast, chant Om Namah Shivaya, and keep vigil until dawn. The entire city vibrates with a low, constant hum of devotion that is unlike anything experienced during any other festival.

The Four Prahars of the Night

Maha Shivaratri is divided into four sacred watches — each with its own ritual offering.

First Prahar

6 PM – 9 PM: Abhishek with Milk

The Shivalinga is bathed with milk and devotees begin their night-long vigil. Temples fill immediately.

Second Prahar

9 PM – 12 AM: Abhishek with Curd

Curd offered to the linga. Processions wind through the old city. Bhajans and chanting intensify.

Third Prahar

12 AM – 3 AM: Abhishek with Ghee

The deepest hour of the night. Considered the most spiritually potent time. The ghats are luminous with lamps.

Fourth Prahar

3 AM – Dawn: Abhishek with Honey

As dawn approaches, the final offering is made. Pilgrims who stayed awake receive special blessings at sunrise.

🌊

Ganga Snan (Sacred Dip)

🔱 Insider Tips

Getting Kashi Vishwanath Darshan

✅ Queue starts forming at 4 AM for the morning darshan — overnight queues can stretch 4–6 hours during Shivaratri
✅ Book the VIP darshan slot through the temple website (kvtemple.org) well in advance — it saves 2–3 hours
✅ No camera, phone, or leather items allowed inside the temple complex — use the cloak room at the entrance

Practical Night Survival

✅ February nights in Varanasi can be 8–12°C — dress warmly for the overnight vigil near the ghats
✅ Thandai (sometimes with bhang) is offered freely by many stalls on Shivaratri — know before you drink
✅ The city is safest when most crowded — relax, go with the flow, and follow the river of pilgrims

📅 When

Phalguna Krishna Chaturdashi — February or March (varies annually)
